Many vehicles including the Mazda3 use 4-door and 5-door naming conventions to differentiate two distinct body styles. We are all familiar with the idea of a 4-door sedan, but what does it mean when a vehicle describes itself as having 5 doors?

It doesn’t mean that there is some weird fifth door lurking somewhere in the car’s design. Instead, it is referring to a hatchback in back. Why doesn’t a trunk count as a fifth door by the same measure? Quite simply, it’s because that hatchback gives you direct access to the cabin whereas a trunk lid only gives you access to the trunk cargo area.

When comparing the 4-door and the 5-door Mazda3, or in more general terms the sedan and the hatchback, you’ll find that both models are nearly the same outside of their body styles. They both have the same trim levels, color options, interior options, engine options, and features. They even have similar fuel economy, with the sedan generally performing slightly better.

The key advantage to the hatchback however, comes simply with its hatchback design. This doesn’t give you more passenger room, but it does increase the cargo volume in back from 12.4 cubic-feet for the sedan to 20.2 cubic-feet for the hatchback. When you fold the seats down in the hatchback, that cargo area grows to 47.1 cubic-feet.

The Mazda3 body styles come in at different prices. In general, the Mazda3 5-door hatchback is a little more expensive. The MSRP for the base Sport trim is $18,095 for the sedan and $19,345 for the hatchback. The Sport trim price gap is partially due to aluminum wheels coming standard on the hatchback variant.

For the top two trims that cost difference narrows to just $750 with the sedan Touring and Grand Touring coming in at $21,140, and $24,195 respectively and the hatchback Touring and Grand Touring coming in at $21,890 and $24,945 respectively.

Overall the cost difference really doesn’t amount to much, so if you desire the hatchback body style with the hatchback looks, the extra cargo room, and the convenience, then just splurge a little. On the other hand, if you prefer sedan stylings, then nothing should hold you back from the Mazda3 4-door. In fact, the cost savings may be good motivation to splurge a little on a higher trim level or additional options.
